Udu Unity Cup: Enerhen, 11 other communities qualify for round of 16

Enerhen Community and 11 other communities in Udu Kingdom, Udu Local Government Area of Delta State have qualified for the round of 16 from the group stages in the on-going Udu Unity Cup football tournament sponsored by the Richard Odibo Foundation to assist Udu youths to develop themselves in the round leather game while also exposing them to local and international scouts who could enlist them in established football clubs to enhance their career.

The tournament, which features teams from all Udu Communities commenced with an opening march on September 4, 2022 at the Egini Grammar School, Egini with Aladja FC playing a 1-1 draw with Igbogidi FC.

The communities were grouped into 8 with Enerhen FC and Aladja United qualifying from Group A, Otor-Udu and Ukperheren qualified from Group B, Egini qualify from Group C while Ekete waterside qualify from Group D. In Group E, Ubogo FC has qualified while in Group F, Obubu and Orhuwhorun qualified for the knock out stage. From Group G, Ovwian qualified while Ujevwu and Ekete Inland qualified from Group H.

The remaining group matches are expected to be played this week while the finals of the competition have been scheduled for December 26, 2022 at Egini Town.

Coach Paul Bukata and Coach Victor Okrigbolor, members of the organizing committee on ground disclosed that the competition has been exciting with the competitive spirit amongst the communities awakened to a peak. 

Coach Bukata noted that the communities had been very enterprising and that participating teams were committed to the goals of the competition with over 70 goals scored so far since the beginning of the tournament. On his part Coach Victor Okrigbolor disclosed that the matches are being played in Four Centres including Egini, Otor-Udu, DSC Township and Orhuwhorun Town. He added that from the group matches so far played, the highest goal scorers’ contenders include Kelly Ediame of Orhuwhorun United with 5 goals, Akpobome Andrew of Ovwian United also with 5 goals and Denye of Owhrode United with 3 goals.

Established as a humanitarian initiative to drive the process of taking the youths from the streets through productive engagement like sporting activities, skill acquisition and other empowerment initiatives, the Richard Odibo Foundation is the brainchild of Sir Richard Odibo, Honourable Federal Commissioner, National Population Commission, Abuja with many resource persons brought on board to drive the organization without bringing politics into it. 

The Udu Unity Cup was first initiated by the Odibo family of Egini in the fifties and the present effort was designed to revive old memories of the unity brought into Udu through the initiatives of the patriarchs of the family. 

According to the organizers, the winner will run home with N300,000.00 while the first runner up will smile home with N200,000,00 and the second runner up will get N100,000.00.
